Cancer Has Been The Worst…and Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me

I have no doubt that the title of this article is probably very confusing to most of you reading this.

How is it that a disease that causes so much pain and suffering be good in any way, let alone the best thing that ever happened to you?

When I was in middle school, I remember being sat down by my parents the night they told my siblings and I that my mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Truthfully, I didn’t really understand what the disease was, all I knew was that it was bad it was really bad from the fact that my grandmother was going through cancer treatments at the time. I didn’t know if she was going to be able to get passed it easily, whether she was going to get really sick, or the worst thought in the world…could she die?

That night after my parents were done explaining what was going to happen from that point forward in terms of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, I just walked up to my room to be myself. I do not know how it happened, but as I was sitting on my bed in silence I just started talking to God. I talked to him as if I was talking to a friend, as if He was sitting in the room with me. I asked Him to make sure my Mom would be OK, and in return I promised I would spend every day moving forward trying to be the best person I could be not only for my family, but anyone that I came across. I chose to take the absolute worst thing that happened in my life up to that point, and have it change me in a positive way.

I think that’s the point Im trying to get across in this article. There are moments in life where you are going to feel like you are at your absolute lowest. It could be the loss of a loved one, the diagnoses of a disease, financial hardship, etc.; but if you can condition yourself to take a powerful negative and turn it into an even more powerful positive I truly believe it can change your life.

Its not going to be easy, but if you lean on your family, friends, and support system to help you through these difficult times, I guarantee you will be better person on the other side of them.
