Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

It’s safe to say 2020 turned out to be drastically different than anyone expected, and if I learned anything, it’s that embracing the changes thrown in front of us has provided many positive results.

In December of 2019 I had just started as the Marketing Coordinator for Team Montani. With four years of college under my belt and a degree in public relations, I was ready to take on the corporate world and the ever-changing sphere of marketing. What I, and so many others, did not see coming was our everyday lives brought to a halt as COVID-19 became our biggest priority.

My personal and professional life seemed to change overnight. One day I was sitting in the office having lunch with my coworkers, and the next I was on the couch with my dog trying to find a comfortable workspace. Family and friends gathered around phones instead of in person to celebrate holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries. My goals, priorities, and outlook became different. Communication changed right before my eyes and I knew I had to transition to what has become our new normal.

I think it’s safe to say 2020 turned out to be drastically different than anyone expected, and if I learned anything, it’s that embracing the changes thrown in front of us has provided many positive results. In particular, we’ve learned that connection and communication can happen no matter where we are. Things we never thought possible are happening remotely, and little by little we are seeing the world we now embrace has many opportunities. This is so very exciting. Personally, I will be taking the changes in communication and connection into 2021 and making them my priority, both at home and in the office.

A new year brings a new mindset. I have learned so much this past year that I never expected to learn. The ever-so-unanticipated 2020 allowed me to become more resourceful, more connected, and more open in my personal and professional life. My mom has always taught me to “not sweat the small stuff.” I’ve kept this in the back of my mind for many years but this new year it is coming to the forefront. 2021 will still bring unexpected things into my life but I only have the ability to control the things that I can. I will definitely wave goodbye to 2020 in my rearview mirror as we all ring in the New Year, but I won’t forget what it taught me. It is time to embrace my mom’s good advice and not sweat the small stuff because it’s just that...small.
