Halloween Crafts

Make your own standalone ghosts.

Get cute and spooky with this Halloween craft

Kids and adults of all ages love creating spooky spirits that can haunt your home on a bookshelf, table, or even hanging from the ceiling!

Here’s what you’ll need to craft them:

  • Cheesecloth
  • Googly eyes
  • Fabric stiffener
  • A large bowl
  • A cup or bottle
  • Water balloons
  • Wax paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors

After returning from your favorite DIY store, this project will only take six simple steps:

  1. Cover your work surface with a few sheets of wax paper. Then, line up your cups or bottles and use tape to secure the balloons to the top.
  2. Drape cheesecloth over each balloon and measure how long your pieces need to be. If your ghosts will be standing on their own, be sure to leave some extra material to pool at the bottom! Once you’ve got the right length, cut the cloth.
  3. Place the cut pieces of cheesecloth in a bowl and cover with fabric stiffener. Massage the liquid into the cloth with your hands so it soaks in.
  4. Gently drape the wet cheesecloth over the top of the balloons to form the bodies of your ghosts. You can use one or multiple layers, depending on how transparent you want your ghosts to be.
  5. Allow the cheesecloth six hours to dry. After waiting, remove from the balloon and add googly eyes to the front.
  6. Decorate your home by standing the ghosts up on a surface or using pieces of fishing line to hang them from your ceiling. You can even use them for outdoor décor – just be sure to bring your new friends in when the weather forecast becomes haunted.
